In a quiet corner of rural India, where evenings once meant darkness and silence, a small yet powerful change has begun to glow—quite literally.
A simple unveiling ceremony marked a big milestone. A signboard reading “Project Chirag – Lighting Up Lives & Empowering Communities” now stands tall amidst trees and open land. But this is more than just a board. It represents hope, dignity, and a new beginning for hundreds of families.
A Village Steps Into the Light – Solar Village
With the launch of the 140th Solar Village initiative, Aahwahan Foundation, in partnership with Steelcase India, is bringing light to places that electricity had forgotten.

Even today, there are villages in India where electricity is still a luxury. For years, families depended on kerosene lamps, children struggled to study after sunset, and daily life paused as darkness took over.
Now, that story is changing.
300+ Families, One Big Transformation
Under this initiative, more than 300 families have been brought out of darkness. Solar street lights have been installed, lighting up pathways, homes, and lives.
The impact goes beyond just visibility:
Children can now study at night
Women feel safer stepping out after sunset
Villages feel more connected and active
A single solar light has sparked a chain reaction of change.
The Moment That Mattered
During the inauguration, locals gathered as the cloth was pulled off the signboard. It was a proud moment—not just for the team behind the project, but for every villager who had waited for this day.
Smiles, curiosity, and hope were visible everywhere.
This wasn’t just an event. It was the start of a brighter future.
More Than Electricity — It’s Empowerment
Projects like Project Chirag are not just about providing light. They are about empowering communities.
When a village gets light:
Education improves
Opportunities increase
Confidence grows
It shows that change doesn’t always need big infrastructure—sometimes, it begins with a single step, a single idea, and a single light.
Happiness Starts Here
As one of the campaign messages beautifully says:
“Happiness starts here…”
And truly, it does.
From darkness to light, from limitation to possibility—this is the journey of India’s solar villages. And with every new village added, the country moves one step closer to a brighter, more inclusive future.
If this is the 140th village, imagine what the 200th or 500th will look like.
Because when one village lights up, the whole nation shines a little brighter.
